Newcastle United Football Club is an English football team that are located in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. Newcastle currently competes in the English Premier League, typically playing in a black a white striped kit. The club are officially known as The Magpies, but have had other unofficial nicknames over the years, often using the word Toon in the name.
Newcastle United were first founded in 1892, after the Newcastle East End F.C. and Newcastle West End F.C. merged to form United. Football in the Newcastle area dated back to 1877 and over the next 15 years various clubs were established and merged together before the formation of Newcastle United. They went onto win their first English league title in the 1904–05 season and their first FA Cup win in 1910.
Since the club was founded Newcastle have played their home games at St. James' Park. Both United's foundation, both Newcastle West End F.C. and Newcastle East End F.C. played at St. James' Park. The stadium is one of the largest football stadiums in Britain, with a capacity of 52,405.
The club historically is seen as one of England's most successful clubs, winning four top-tier league titles before 1927. The club has also won a number of FA Cup titles throughout its history. While they were reasonably successful domestically, Newcastle has failed to challenge for continental trophies on a regular basis. Jimmy Lawrence hold the record for the number of appearances for the club with 496. Alan Shearer is the record goal scorer, after scoring 206 goals for the club. Joe Harvey is the clubs longest serving manager and was in charge when the club won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969.
Newcastle and Sunderland F.C. have a strong local rivalry. Games between the two clubs are known as the Tyne-Wear Derby, which dates back to 1898.
Historically, Newcastle are seen as one of England's most successful clubs. They have won 4 top-tier English league titles and 6 FA Cups. The clubs only major European success came in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2006, after they finished runner-up in 2001.
