In their early days, Newton played other rail companies and Lancashire based teams, before joining The Football League in 1892. The club won its first English league title in 1908 and won their first FA Cup a year later.

Before United played at Old Trafford, they were known to play their home games at Bank Street. They left Bank Street in 1910, moving to their current home. Old Trafford is now the largest club ground in the United Kingdom, with a stadium capacity of 75,731.

Ten years later, United were the first English club team to win the European Cup with Matt Busby as their manager. The club is also well-known for their dominance of English football in the 1990s and 2000s under Alex Ferguson's management. Ferguson was the club's longest serving manager, from 1986 to 2013. During this period he won 28 major honours and had a number of notable players play for him during this era. One of these was Ryan Giggs, who is currently the record appearance holder.
