Leicester was founded in 1884 as Leicester Fosse. The club was named Fosse, due to the proximity of their home ground to Fosse Road in Leicester. They started in the Midland League in 1891 and after finishing second in 1894, they were elected to play in The Football League for the first time. After the Second World War in 1919, the club ceased trading as Leicester Fosse and was reformed as Leicester City F.C..

Leicester as Leicester Fosse, started played their home games at various stadiums in their early existence. Seven years after Leicester was founded they moved to a permanent home at Filbert Street, where they played for 111 years. In 2002, the club moved to their current home, The King Power Stadium.

The club has spent the majority of its existence in the English second tier, but after reformation in 1919 they were runners-up in the top flight in 1928-29 season, which is their highest ever league finish.

Leicester City's main rivals are considered to be Derby County and Nottingham Forest. Leicester also has a strong rivalry with the West Midland based team, Coventry City. The derby between Leicester and Coventry is often referred to as the M69 derby.
